A lot of new words come into Japanese from English (and other languages) through katakanization. While importing new words is a universal theme, Japanese tends to use these English words because they sound "cool", and often replace words that have been in use for the sake of fashion. There is a department dedicated to finding acceptable Japanese words for the English loanwords. An example of the department's work is turning domestic violence - Japanized as domesutikku baiorensu ドメスティック・バイオレンス(quite the mouthful, isn't it?)- into katei bouryoku 家庭暴力. As someone who tries to avoid loanwords when an acceptable Japanese word already exists, I've made new words when writing my blog and decided to share them here.

英語や他の言語から色んな外来語がカタカナ化で日本語に入ります。これは世界の言語で行いますが、日本語の場合は大体「格好いい」だと思われていますので、流行の為に普通の日本語の言葉を変えます。外来語を日本語化する為の局もあります。例えば、英語のdomestic violenceという事は先ず日本で「ドメスティック・バイオレンス」のように話されて書いてあった。とても言いにくいと思わないですか。しかし、日本語化されてから「家庭暴力」になりました。こちらの方は全然いいです。自分の日記を書く時は出来るだけカタカナ外来語を無視して新作日本語を作ります。こちらで皆様に見せようと思っていますのでどうぞご覧下さい。
