I was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in the early 80's, but moved to a small town at an early age. This meant I remembered living in the city and longed to return. Eventually, my drive to leave my then-hometown led me to make a choice - go to the farthest point possible from my country village. One way would deposit me in the UK. The other way, Japan. Since I already spoke English, I figured I could do Britain anytime. I chose Japan.
It turns out I'm good at languages, at least East Asian ones, so far. Japanese was never a problem and Mandarin is currently coming along all right. Cantonese looms in the future.
I love history and politics. Too much. Blood and war, baby!
One question I get asked a lot is, why did you choose the name Hanenosuke? It all has to do with Japan's system for transcribing "foreign" names. All sounds have to be hammered into the Japanese syllabary. The closest approximate pronunciation for my name is Patorikku, which would be written as パトリック. Since knowing more kanji connotes more intelligence, I wrote out a kanji name based on the pronunciation, 羽刀律久. This is way too long and unwieldly, so I took the first character, 羽, with the "normal" pronunciation of "hane", and added the male suffix -之助.
８０年代にカナダのオンタリオ州オタワ京生まれけど、児童の時は家族と一緒に田舎な町に引越しした。それで、都市で住む事をずっと覚えて帰りたい感じが強かったから、出身になった村を絶対に出る感じが出た。出身から一番遠い所に行く為に、二つの道があった。一つは、英国に行く。他の道は、日本。もう英語が分かっているからいつでもイギリスに行けると思ったから、日本を選んだ。
言語はやっぱり得意。ま、東亜の言語のみかもしれないけど・・・日本語を習うのは全然問題なかったし、現在勉強している北京語はまま大丈夫。将来は多分広東語も学ぶ。

「どうして羽之助という名前を選びましたか？」とよく聞かれている。先ずは異国人が自分の名前を日本語で書く時、日本語の発音制度に入れ込まなければなりません。自分の名前の一番近い日本語の発音は「パトリック」ですが、漢字の能力を自慢すると日本人の目に高まると言われているので、当て字の「羽刀律久」を作った。これは長すぎるし、見ると発音が当然に分かりにくいので最初の「羽」の字を取って男性の名前の接尾の「之助」を足した。
